Interior Painter & Color Choices

The color that an interior painter uses will make a big difference in the way the room looks. Here are some basics about paint choice.

An interior painter can transform the way the inside of a room looks. The rooms can appear larger, smaller, warmer or cooler simply by changing the wall coloring. Painting can be a big job, and it's important to select the proper tones for the decor. Here are some things to think about:

- Color 101: One basic fact about colors is that there are only 3 primary colors: red, blue and yellow. All other hues are derived from combining these primaries in some way. For example, red and blue make purple; red and yellow make orange; yellow and blue make green and each of these will have a range from light to dark.

- Tints and Shades: In addition, all hues may be categorized into tints and shades. A tint is a lighter version while a shade is a darker version. The darker varieties are often reserved for trim or accents while walls are often painted with softer, lighter tones.

- Warm and cool tones: Some selections will bring warmth to a room while others will bring about a sense of coolness. It's better to decorate small places with cooler hues in order for the space to feel airy and not closed in. Some warm examples are orange, yellow and red while cooler selections include those in the green, blue or purple family.

- Neutral choices: Beiges, creams, black and white these are all neutral selections that can make quite the impact in terms of backdrop for the furnishings. Decorating doesn't always require lots of color; sometimes a more natural and neutral look is preferable.

- Quality of paint: The thicker and higher quality the product, the more likely it will cover luxuriously and with fewer coats. Buying that watered down and less expensive brand might not be cost saving after all. Additional coats plus more hours of labor may change the equation.

- Brushes: The best quality brushes will make this task look better in the end and be accomplished more quickly. Shoddy tools don't really save cash in the end. If you decide to go with a proper interior painter, you can trust that his tools are up to snuff, or else he'd be out of business.

- DIY or Contractor?: Many individuals are able to paint the inside of their home in a relatively short amount of time. This may work in many cases, but it can also end up in a messy outcome. Professionals know how to make the finished product look pristine. No spills, drips or carpets ruined.

- Shaken not stirred: It's wise to have the cans of paint well shaken before leaving the store. It's quite difficult to get the product stirred up sufficiently at home with a stir stick. Sticks are great for a bit of touch up mixing but the product must be machine shaken for several minutes in order to have an evenly distributed product.

There are lots of choices in terms of hue, quality of paint and tools as well as the decision about hiring a professional or doing it yourself. One thing is for sure, though. An interior painter or anyone with design savvy can totally change the appearance of one's abode.
