Doing it yourself can add up to big savings when it comes to installing a kitchen, and the money that you would save could be used for upgrades in countertops or appliances.
If you do not have all of the specifics ironed out, you are going to find it difficult to install your own kitchen, making it very important that you understand at least the basics of kitchen installation. If you have been searching for the information to install kitchen cabinets, then it might be that you have finally found that resource.
Now, to begin with, you are going to need some basic hand tools and power equipment to get the job done right. These are tools such as a hammer, clamps, a four foot level, jig saw, table or circular saw, belt sander or a hand or power planer, countersink bit and various sized drill bits and spade bits.
Once you have determined the layout of your new kitchen, and have found the high point of the floor, then you are ready for your kitchen cabinet installation. The corner wall cabinet is where you will want to typically start the installation. Locate the framing behind the cabinet location using a stud finder, and mark the stud locations on the wall. Now, the next step is to take those locations and tranfer them onto the backside of the cabinet, or if you would like, you can place the marks on the inside of the cabinet as well. This is where you will want to double check that the marks for the drill holes are loacted close to the top and bottom of the cabinet which is the strongest point.
Now, paying attention to detail, you are going to want to make sure that the cabinets are installed level and plumb as any mistake here during this process will greatly be seen as you progress down the run of the wall cabinets. I cannot emphasize this last step enough, because if you get this wrong, you are going to be hating life a little later down the road. Trust me, you will have a much easier time with your kitchen cabinet installation if you take the time to do so.
You will need to shim the corner cabinet out to where it is perfectly level and plumb. By getting the very first cabinet installed perfectly, the rest will install rather easily and quickly. However, you are still going to make sure that the next cabinets are level and plumb, just that it will not be as difficult as the first to get right.
Now, in order to make the cabinets ligher and to protect the doors, I recommend that you remove them from the cabinets. You want to make sure that you try to keep any damage to the doors to a minimum, because as you would find out if you needed to have one replaced, they are the most expensive part of the cabinet.
