It's not your Grandma's kitchen anymore. Today's homes offer more selections of style and design when it comes to cabinetry than were available in your grandma's day, including kitchen styles that make better use of space and can set the tone that carries throughout the whole home.

Every aspect of your kitchen, from the flooring to the countertops, sets the tone for your kitchen. However, the cabinetry is by far the most important aspect of the room because it sets the tone for the look and style that you want to create throughout your home.

The cottage kitchen, for example, creates a simplistic look that emphasis a cabinet style with light wood tones or cabinets that are painted a light, sheer white. Country style kitchens tend to take on a back-to-basics approach and create a relaxed atmosphere for the occupants. This is a favorite look for homes that are not elaborate, but have a style statement to make.

Other looks that build on the foundation of the country style kitchen include the English or French kitchen. These styles emphasize cabinetry that is a throwback to the farmhouse kitchen. They feature crisp, clean lines that blend the modern with the vintage to make a kitchen that is full of character without appearing either too modern or too vintage. It is a great combination for homes that have both the kitchen space and character to carry it.

On the other extreme of the country classic style are the kitchens that strive for the modern look. Modern style features cabinets that embrace clean, straight lines and utilize industrial materials instead of the traditional wood that most cabinetry is made from. Cabinets in a modern kitchen are generally crafted from metal and come in eye popping colors, including deep shades of orange or subtle hues of blue.

The opposite of modern style is, of course, the rustic kitchen which boasts distressed woodwork and the feel of being in a little cabin in the woods. This style is full of character and charm and complete with hidden modern conveniences.

For those who do want to create or keep the feel of Grandma's kitchen, there is always the vintage look. Everything comes back into style eventually, but with more modern traits tucked into place, old fashioned kitchens can be more user friendly. A vintage kitchen can recreate the feel of the 1950's with simple wood cabinets and a color pallet of reds and yellows. When done right, it can create a retro look that mimics Donna Reed's comfortable kitchen where every meal was homemade and cookies were made from scratch.

Take your time to decide on the look that you want for your kitchen before you begin. And remember, a remodel should create your dream kitchen and the cabinets play a big part in creating the anchor to the look you are striving for, whether that's a country charmer or a vintage throwback.
